Psychology student Liam Grunau on exchange in Germany

30 Jul 2024

1. Why did you choose your host country and host university?
I chose the IUSP at Philipps Universität Marburg because of its cohort approach to international learning. I experienced life abroad with a group of about 30 other international students around my age, and it made it much easier to make friends, some of which I travelled with around Europe! I chose Germany because I had never been before, and I wanted to try something new! Germany is also a big transport hub for Europe, so it is easy to travel from and within the country.

2. What was your favourite experience while on exchange?
My favourite experience on exchange was being able to travel so easily in Europe! Travel within Europe is so much cheaper and easier than it is in North America, and I think anyone visiting Europe should take advantage of that – use the trains often. I got to see and learn so much about other cultures.

3. What was something surprising or different that you experienced while on exchange?
I was surprised at how much about Canada I was able to learn while abroad. Even just noticing subtle cultural differences made me rethink how things work at home in Canada. I also learned a lot about the U.S because of how many American students were in my program with me.

4. Words of advice to a student considering an exchange?
This is an experience that you can really only do when you’re in your undergrad or doing grad school, and it will change the way you view the world and yourself for the better. Do it, you won’t regret it.
